  • Where is the name “sine” come from
  •

Indian mathematician Aryabhata (476-550) made significant contributions to trigonometry. He created a sine table and calculated values for sin=, sin=, and so on. He referred to the sine function as "jiva," meaning "chord of an arc" or "bowstring of a hunter." This was later translated into Arabic as "dschiba." Through various translations, it was mistakenly written as "dschaib," which means "bay or indentation." Finally, in the book "The Science of Stars," dschaib was translated into Latin as "sinus," which ultimately gave rise to the English term "sine."
